When submitting an item for consideration in our sales, you may find these best practices and examples useful. Providing Sotheby's specialists with the necessary detailed information ensures a more accurate and timely appraisal of your objects.

Photographing

Have the item accessible so you can take 4-6 photographs from different angles, if possible. The photos should show the entire item, front and back, as well as details of the condition, medium or texture, and any unusual markings. Photos need to be clear and of good quality. If there is a signature, for example, provide a close-up image to review for authenticity.

Lighting

Natural lighting is best to avoid glare or reflections that hide important details, though in some cases we understand that you may need to use a flash. Consider removing items from behind glass for better photos. We recommend photographing most objects against a neutral or white background. However, some items like silver will show up better against a darker background.

Describing

Include details and supporting information, such as provenance, price history, citations or references, unusual characteristics, and other insights that allow our experts to understand the quality and significance of your item. Mention certificates or appraisals or other documentation in your submission if you are not able to upload them.

The process is easy and simple, but taking the time to follow these guidelines will result in a much better experience and more efficient time frame to get your property appraised.
